Conservation Volunteers – Why Do They Do It?

Recently, the Grand Traverse Conservation District sponsored a workbee to plant trees and shrubs at the newly expanded Grand Traverse Natural Education Reserve. Their work will help speed the recovery of lands uncovered from the backwaters of the old Boardman dam, just south of Traverse City.

Over three dozen volunteers of all ages gathered on a cool and cloudy fall day to spend three hours planting a thousand trees and shrubs to help stabilize the newly exposed flood plain and encourage the development of new habitat for wildlife.

We asked five of the volunteers why they were digging in.
