Witness: Kirk Waterstripe on the Importance of Healthy Soils

Spodosol_2Specializing in soil science, Kirk Waterstripe is a plant biology instructor and manager of science laboratories at Northwestern Michigan College (NMC). In this short video, he briefly describes his interests in soil systems. He emphasizes that healthy, biologically active soils are critical water filtration systems that also play an important role in collecting and retaining carbon.

Kirk observes that precipitation is becoming more variable and less dependable, even as the severity of rain storms increase. He believes that appropriate management of soils will help us capture, clean and and retain water that might otherwise wash off pollutants into nearby streams and lakes.

Nature Change thanks NMC Audio Technology student, Conor Lynch for this video essay!
